About the Character Counter

The Character Counter is a free online tool that provides real-time statistics about your text. It counts characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, and lines as you type. It also estimates reading and speaking time based on widely accepted averages, and shows how your text fits within the character limits of popular platforms including Twitter/X, eBay, Google search results, YouTube, Etsy, Airbnb, and more.

Why Character Limits Matter

Every platform has its own character limits, and exceeding them can mean your content gets truncated or rejected entirely. Google typically displays the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title in search results, while meta descriptions are cut off at around 155 to 160 characters. eBay listing titles have a strict 80-character limit, and every character counts for search visibility. Twitter/X posts are limited to 280 characters. Knowing exactly where you stand against these limits helps you craft more effective content.

Reading and Speaking Time

The reading time estimate is based on an average reading speed of 238 words per minute, which is the figure most commonly cited in research on adult reading speeds. The speaking time estimate uses 150 words per minute, which represents a natural, measured speaking pace suitable for presentations and speeches. These estimates are useful for bloggers, content creators, students preparing presentations, and anyone writing a speech or script.
