What is Speaking Time?

Speaking time is the estimated duration it takes to deliver a piece of text aloud. The average conversational speaking pace is around 130 words per minute, whilst professional presenters typically speak at 140 to 160 WPM. Audiobook narrators often read at 150 to 160 WPM, and auctioneers can reach 200 WPM or more. Unlike reading speed, speaking pace must account for natural pauses, emphasis, and audience interaction.

Why Speaking Time Matters

Knowing your speaking time is essential for presentations, speeches, podcasts, YouTube videos, and voiceover work. Conference talks have strict time limits (TED Talks are 18 minutes, lightning talks are 5 minutes), and going over time is one of the most common mistakes speakers make. By calculating speaking time in advance, you can trim or expand your script to fit the allotted slot. The extra pause time slider lets you account for audience laughter, slide transitions, or dramatic pauses.

Tips for Controlling Your Speaking Pace

Record yourself reading your script and compare the actual time to the estimate. Most people speak faster when nervous, so practise at a slightly slower pace than feels natural. Use paragraph breaks in your script as cues to pause and breathe. Bold or underline key phrases to remind yourself to slow down for emphasis. If your text is too long for the time slot, cut content rather than speeding up, as rushing reduces comprehension and audience engagement.
